Pre-flowering Neottia nidus-avis observed in Montserrat

During a hike amidst the distinctive rock formations of Montserrat, I encountered a specimen of Neottia nidus-avis, commonly known as the Bird's-nest Orchid. Notably, the plant was still in its pre-flowering stage, offering an opportunity, if conditions allow, to observe its development on subsequent visits to the area.

This unique geophyte orchid stands out because, unlike most plants, it completely lacks chlorophyll and displays a uniform yellowish-brown or honey color. As a mycoheterotrophic species, Neottia nidus-avis obtains its nutrients by parasitizing fungi (of the Sebacinaceae family) which are themselves associated in symbiosis with nearby trees. Its presence in Montserrat is consistent with its preferred habitat of intensely shaded areas with humus-rich soils, conditions often found in deciduous or coniferous forests. Its scientific name, meaning 'bird's nest', aptly refers to the unique tangled mass of its thick roots.
