Observation of Neottia nidus-avis in the Shady Areas of Vidrà
Observed on 5/23/2026
Description
During a recent exploration along the Vidrà trail, we had the opportunity to document numerous specimens of Neottia nidus-avis, commonly known as the Bird's-nest Orchid. These were found in the most humid and shady areas of the route, a habitat that perfectly matches the ecological preferences of this unique orchid.
The observed individuals were in good overall condition; many had reached a considerable height and were in full bloom, displaying their characteristic uniform brown inflorescences, while some specimens were just beginning their flowering cycle. Neottia nidus-avis is a fascinating orchid, completely lacking chlorophyll, which obtains its nutrients by parasitizing fungi associated with trees. This unique adaptation is reflected in its yellowish-brown or honey color, clearly distinguishing it from other species. Its abundant presence in these conditions of intense shade and humus-rich, humid soils in Vidrà underscores the importance of conserving these forest ecosystems for the local flora.
