Observation of Bird's-nest Orchid at Cap de la Boixassa
Observed on 5/30/2026
Description
During an ascent route to Cap de la Boixassa, we had the opportunity to document a single specimen of Neottia nidus-avis, commonly known as the Bird's-nest Orchid. This unique geophyte orchid is remarkable for its uniform yellowish-brown or honey color, as it completely lacks chlorophyll and is a mycoheterotrophic plant that parasitizes fungi for its nutrients.
The individual was found in an area of beech forests with intense shade and near a river, a habitat that perfectly matches the species' ecological preferences. Neottia nidus-avis thrives in humus-rich soils and deeply shaded areas within deciduous forests.
Although the environment appeared ideal for its presence, we had anticipated finding more individuals of this orchid. The Neottia nidus-avis is characterized by its leaves reduced to scales and its dense cluster of brown flowers. This observation confirms its presence in this area and highlights the importance of preserving these specific forest ecosystems.
