Observation of Neottia nidus-avis in Ripollès
Observed on 6/10/2026
Description
During a recent field exploration in the Ripollès region, we had the opportunity to document a unique specimen of Neottia nidus-avis, commonly known as the Bird's-nest Orchid. This distinctive orchid was found in good condition, nestled in an area of intense shade with humus-rich soil, characteristic conditions for its preferred habitat in deciduous or coniferous forests. The observation was made in close proximity to other orchids of the genus Neottia, specifically Neottia cordata.
Neottia nidus-avis stands out due to its unique physiology, entirely lacking chlorophyll, and displaying a uniform yellowish-brown or honey color. Its scientific name, meaning 'bird's nest', aptly describes the dense, tangled mass of its roots. As a mycoheterotrophic plant, it obtains nutrients by parasitizing fungi associated with tree roots—a fascinating adaptation that allows it to thrive in shaded environments. Its flowers, arranged in a dense cluster, with the characteristic bilobed and spurless labellum, were clearly visible, confirming its identification.
