Several Common Twayblades found in Ripollès field study
Observed on 6/10/2026
Description
During a recent field survey in the Ripollès region, we had the opportunity to document the presence of several specimens of Neottia ovata, commonly known as the Ovate Twayblade or Common Twayblade. This perennial terrestrial orchid is identifiable by its two large, opposite, oval-shaped basal leaves, a characteristic feature that gives it its specific name.
The observed specimens were in good condition and notably visible, standing out from the surrounding grass. At one specific point, they were found growing alongside Dactylorhiza fuchsii, another orchid species often found in similar meadow and damp environments. This co-occurrence suggests a shared habitat with similar soil and moisture preferences, consistent with Neottia ovata's known adaptability to various environments, including forests and meadows, where it prefers alkaline or slightly acidic soils with medium moisture. Its small, yellowish-green flowers, though discreet, added a subtle note to the herbaceous landscape of Ripollès.
