An Ophrys feast in Alt Empordà: The variability of O. arachnitiformis
Observed on 3/14/2026
Description
Our recent excursions through the Alt Empordà region have been nothing short of spectacular, offering a true feast for the senses and a testament to the incredible orchid biodiversity of Catalonia. During our stops, we were immensely fortunate to encounter multitudes of two genera that always captivate us: Ophrys arachnitiformis and Ophrys passionis.
This particular series of observations allowed us to delve deeper into the fascinating variability of Ophrys arachnitiformis. From specimen to specimen, we observed a stunning range of forms, sizes, and patterns on its labellum, each unique yet undeniably part of the same species. The highlight of our findings was undoubtedly the discovery of its rare hypochromatic version, a delicate beauty with reduced pigmentation, standing out gracefully and subtly amidst its more vibrantly colored kin. It's always a privilege to witness such natural artistry and adaptation in the wild, and Alt Empordà never ceases to amaze us with its hidden gems!
