Ophrys passionis: Consistent Abundance in Alt Empordà
Observed on 3/14/2026
Description
Our day of exploration through various spots in the Alt Empordà region was, once again, a delight for wild orchid enthusiasts. Throughout the day, we ventured into the characteristic landscapes of the county, always with the expectation of discovering some of its botanical treasures.
And, as expected, it did not disappoint. We found numerous colonies of Ophrys passionis, one of the orchids that consistently graces us with an abundant and vibrant presence at this time of year. This consistency in its appearance, far from being a surprise, is a confirmation of the health of its habitats and the ecological balance of the region. Observing so many specimens in splendid flowering condition, with their distinctive insect-mimicking labella, is always an immense satisfaction. Year after year, Alt Empordà proves to be a reliable sanctuary for this fascinating species.
