Observation of Ophrys catalaunica x speculum in the Girona Region
Observed on 4/26/2026
Description
This Sunday, April 26th, we dedicated the day to field research in the Garrotxa and La Selva counties. During this exploration, we had the opportunity to observe two specimens of a natural hybrid: Ophrys catalaunica × Ophrys speculum.
These two specimens were found in good condition, belonging to a population known for several years in the La Selva county. This hybrid, which results from the cross between Ophrys catalaunica and Ophrys speculum, displays a combination of its parent species' traits. Still lacking a formal description, it exhibits characteristics of O. speculum's iridescent labellum and O. catalaunica's smaller flowers with an elongated labellum. Its flowering period typically occurs in May.
Its presence in the Girona area is sparse and localized, being a sensitive plant that requires discretion when documenting its exact locations. This finding enhances our understanding of these local populations and the unique flora of the region.
