The "Little Men" of Sant Martí Sacalm
Observed on 5/25/2025
Description
During our ascent towards el Far, departing from the picturesque village of Sant Martí Sacalm, we had a memorable encounter. Precisely where the meadows stretch out with lush greenery near the municipality, we stumbled upon several specimens of the fascinating Orchis anthropophora.
This orchid, commonly known as the Man Orchid (or Man-shaped Orchid) due to the peculiar form of its flowers, immediately captivated us with its delicate charm and unmistakable appearance. We observed multiple individuals in a promising state of growth, each displaying its characteristic inflorescence, with its greenish and brownish 'little men' perfectly formed and well-defined. They appeared well-established and healthy, thriving in the tempered sunlight offered by these open meadows.
An always rewarding discovery that underscores the rich biodiversity of these Girona lands and serves as a beautiful reminder of the hidden wonders awaiting us with every step of our journey.
