Late flowering of Orchis anthropophora in Baix Empordà
Observed on 4/25/2026
Description
A pleasant spring afternoon led me once again to the heart of Baix Empordà, to those familiar haunts where I've so often delighted in the rich orchid diversity of this region. In late April, my anticipation was high, and I was fortunate enough to stumble upon numerous specimens of the captivating Orchis anthropophora, commonly known as the "Man Orchid" due to the unique shape of its blooms.
While the sight was magnificent and the density of plants noteworthy, most of the specimens were already in a quite advanced stage of flowering. The lower flowers of many had begun to show signs of fatigue, having completed their life cycle or simply starting to wither. This observation serves as a poignant reminder of the ephemeral beauty in nature and the importance of cherishing every moment. Despite their incipient decline, the presence of the Man Orchid in these spots is always a gift for the soul, a testament to a spring that is well underway!
