Montseny exploration: encounters with Orchis mascula
Observed on 5/16/2026
Description
During a recent circular hiking route in the Montseny massif, we had the opportunity to document several flowering specimens of Orchis mascula, commonly known as the Early Purple Orchid. The trail, which extended from Sant Marçal towards Matagalls, Turó de l'Home, and Agudes, revealed this orchid in various locations of interest.
The flowering specimens, displaying their characteristic intense purple or pink flowers, were found in two main areas: one near the summit of Turó de l'Home and the other in the intermediate zone between Turó de l'Home and Agudes. Orchis mascula is a geophyte orchid featuring a basal rosette of oblong-lanceolate leaves, often marked with purple-brown spots, and a dense, cylindrical spike inflorescence. This species is known for its adaptability to a variety of habitats, including mountain meadows and forests, and can thrive up to 2,500 meters in altitude, making Montseny an ideal environment for its presence. Its populations in this area have been observed with varying frequency in previous years, confirming its recurrent appearance in this emblematic Catalan massif.
