Observation of the Last Early Purple Orchids in Ripollès
Observed on 6/10/2026
Description
During a recent field exploration in the Ripollès region, we had the opportunity to document two specimens of Orchis mascula, commonly known as the Early Purple Orchid. This discovery was particularly interesting as it occurred at a time when the first Dactylorhiza of the season were just beginning to emerge, suggesting that the Orchis mascula was nearing the end of its flowering cycle, a somewhat unexpected find.
The two observed individuals were somewhat past their prime, with their characteristic intense purple or pink flowers beginning to fade, yet still displaying the distinctive features of this robust perennial geophyte orchid. The Early Purple Orchid typically blooms in early spring, and its robust flower spikes are a hallmark of its presence. Finding these specimens in an advanced state of bloom highlights the diverse local conditions of Ripollès, where the species thrives in mountain meadows, pastures, and forests, adaptable to various soils and altitudes.
