Ophrys purpurea: First buds in Alt Empordà
Observed on 3/14/2026
Description
During one of our regular excursions through the picturesque Alt Empordà region, our primary mission was to check on our cherished specimens of Ophrys purpurea, commonly known as the Giant Orchid. We knew we were visiting a little early for its full bloom, but the thrill of the hunt and the hope of finding an advanced specimen always compels us to explore.
Although we didn't have the fortune of witnessing any fully bloomed Ophrys purpurea, our day was far from fruitless! We successfully counted over 10 vigorous plants of this magnificent orchid, all showing robust signs of life. The most exciting discovery was finding one already "budding," with its delicate flower spikes formed and poised to unfurl, and another in a quite advanced state of development. This observation fills us with joy and promises a splendid flowering display in the coming weeks. Nature, always on its own schedule, gifts us with the sweet anticipation!
