Observation of Platanthera bifolia at Santa Margarida Volcano
Observed on 6/12/2026
Description
During a recent short ascent to Santa Margarida Volcano, we had the pleasure of encountering several flowering specimens of Platanthera bifolia, commonly known as the Lesser Butterfly-orchid. This observation was particularly rewarding, as this delicate and fragrant perennial terrestrial orchid typically flowers during the summer months, and the specimens displayed notable vitality.
The individuals located exhibited their characteristic two large, shiny basal leaves, typical of the species. The inflorescences featured cylindrical floral spikes bearing white or greenish-white flowers, notable for their long, slender spurs where nectar accumulates. These traits are distinctive of P. bifolia, which is also recognized by its parallel pollinia. The volcanic environment, with its clearings and montane meadows, aligns with its preferred habitat, and the presence of these flowers suggests activity from its pollinators, the nocturnal moths drawn by its sweet fragrance. This finding enriches the botanical record for this area of La Garrotxa.
