Observation of Greater Butterfly-orchid at Barbarisa Lakes
Observed on 6/20/2026
Description
During the ascent to the peak and near the Ibones de Barbarisa, we were fortunate to observe numerous specimens of Platanthera chlorantha, commonly known as the Greater Butterfly-orchid. These robust terrestrial orchids were in an excellent state of flowering, adding a delicate presence to the mountain landscape.
The plants, typically ranging from 20 to 60 cm in height, displayed their characteristic two large, oval, and shiny basal leaves. The inflorescences were dense with yellowish-green and waxy-textured flowers, each featuring a long, narrow labellum. A key identification feature, the divergent pollinia forming an inverted «V», was clearly visible on many individuals. These orchids prefer unimproved pastures and open forest edges, often thriving on calcareous soils, which are commonly found in such mountainous environments. Their strong presence and good condition suggest a healthy population, likely well within their typical May to July flowering period.
