Serapias lingua: The familiar beauty of Sant Martí's meadows
Observed on 5/25/2025
Description
During our ascent towards el Far, commencing from the peaceful village of Sant Martí Sacalm, our gaze naturally fell upon the lush green meadows stretching just beyond the municipal bounds. There, amidst the damp, morning-sunlit grass, we encountered a familiar yet always welcome sight: numerous specimens of Serapias lingua, the delicate Tongue Orchid.
This species, so characteristic of our Mediterranean meadows, was in splendid form, with many flowers in optimal bloom. Its distinctive purplish-brown hue and unique, tongue-like shape brought a vibrant splash of life to this mountain corner. While its discovery wasn't a "novelty" in the sense of a rare find, its sheer abundance and the excellent condition of the plants provided a visual spectacle that underscored the rich biodiversity of the landscape. A common treasure that never fails to enchant!
