Presence of Anacamptis coriophora in a La Garrotxa location
Observed on 5/31/2026
Description
After a morning trek in Puig del Far (Osona), I continued my field exploration to a specific site in La Garrotxa, primarily aiming to observe Himantoglossum hircinum. During this visit, I had the opportunity to highlight the presence of Anacamptis coriophora, commonly known as the Bug Orchid, flourishing in the same vicinity.
The specimens of Anacamptis coriophora observed were in good condition, exhibiting the species' distinctive characteristics. This terrestrial orchid typically grows up to 60 cm in height, featuring a dense, oblong-cylindrical inflorescence. Its flowers are notably a dark wine red or reddish-purple, with a three-lobed labellum often displaying red spots on a paler center and greenish edges, complemented by a conical spur that points downwards. True to its name, the species is known for the unpleasant bug-like odor emitted by its flowers, though it is worth noting that some subspecies, such as A. coriophora subsp. fragrans, have a sweeter fragrance.
Ecologically, Anacamptis coriophora thrives in full sun locations, particularly in humid meadows and areas with very moist or soggy soil, conditions that appeared consistent with the observed habitat in La Garrotxa. Its flowering period typically extends from April or early May to early July. This species is considered relatively rare and localized, facing threats from habitat destruction and the drainage of wetlands, which underscores the significance of such observations for understanding its distribution and conservation needs in the region.
