Documenting Anacamptis laxiflora in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
This observation stems from an exploration of several locations within the Aude department in France. During this field day, we had the opportunity to document the presence of the Loose-flowered Orchid (Anacamptis laxiflora).
Specimens of this terrestrial orchid were consistently found in noticeably wet and soft soils, a habitat that perfectly aligns with the species' known preference for wet meadows, marshy areas, and humid depressions. We observed quite tall spikes, some approaching 60 cm in height, which is characteristic of this robust plant. The inflorescence displayed flowers that were notably spaced out, exhibiting its lax arrangement—a distinctive feature that gives the species its name and helps differentiate it from other orchids in the genus. Its uniformly green, mostly cauline leaves also served as key identification elements in its natural environment.
This finding in Aude underscores the importance of conserving these humid ecosystems, which are crucial for the survival of species like Anacamptis laxiflora, an effective biological indicator of the environmental quality of these specific sites.
