Abundant Anacamptis morio Observation in Aude Department
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent field exploration across various points within the Aude department in southern France, we had the opportunity to make a notable observation of the terrestrial orchid Anacamptis morio, commonly known as the Green-winged Orchid. At our first stop, we encountered a considerable population, with more than twenty individuals of this species.
Anacamptis morio is a widespread Euro-Mediterranean orchid recognized for its striking appearance. The specimens observed in the Aude department displayed the species' typical characteristics, including its variably colored flowers—ranging from dark violet to pinkish hues—and, especially, the distinctive lateral sepals with prominent green veins that form a hood over the floral column. This species, which reaches a height of 10 to 40 cm, with its basal rosette leaves and spicate inflorescence, thrives in dry meadows and mountain pastures, often on calcareous, well-lit soils, an environment consistent with the landscapes we were surveying. Its flowering period typically occurs in spring, generally from February or March until May or June.
Although this orchid is classified as Near Threatened (NT) by the IUCN globally and European-wide, the presence of such a numerous population in the Aude area testifies to its adaptability and the rich natural heritage of the region. This observation underscores the importance of continuing to document and protect these populations to ensure their conservation.
