Observation of Anacamptis pyramidalis in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
This observation stems from an exploration of various locations within the Aude department, France. In this entry, we highlight the sighting of Anacamptis pyramidalis, commonly known as the Pyramidal Orchid.
Most of the individuals observed were in a pre-flowering stage, with their characteristic conical or pyramidal inflorescences just beginning to develop, reflecting the species' scientific name, pyramidalis. However, we were fortunate to document some specimens that had already started to bloom, displaying their small flowers, typically ranging from pale pink to intense purple. This terrestrial orchid, known for its preference for open, sunny areas such as meadows and roadsides with calcareous soils, was observed at the cusp of its main flowering period, which generally runs from May to July.
The presence of these Pyramidal Orchids in Aude contributes to our understanding of the regional flora and provides insight into their phenological cycle.
