From Osona to Garrotxa: Pyramidal Orchid Sighting
Observed on 5/31/2026
Description
After a morning trek at Puig del Far in Osona, our botanical journey continued to a specific location in the Garrotxa region, with the primary goal of observing Himantoglossum hircinum, commonly known as the Lizard Orchid. During this focused exploration, we were pleased to also encounter several specimens of Anacamptis pyramidalis, the Pyramidal Orchid, flourishing at the same site.
The Anacamptis pyramidalis individuals observed were in good condition, exhibiting their characteristic dense, multi-flowered terminal spikes. These inflorescences typically display a distinctive conical or pyramidal shape, giving the species its scientific name. The flowers, ranging from pale pink to intense purple, stood out against the green backdrop of the habitat. This species thrives in open, sunny areas, often in meadows or scrubland with a clear preference for calcareous soils, conditions that align well with many parts of the Garrotxa landscape. Finding these vibrant Pyramidal Orchids alongside the Lizard Orchid added a rewarding dimension to our fieldwork in this diverse natural area.
