A Common Sight: Anacamptis pyramidalis
Observed on 6/5/2026
Description
During a recent field excursion, while primarily focused on locating the rare Himantoglossum hircinum, we encountered a widespread and abundant population of the Anacamptis pyramidalis, commonly known as the Pyramidal Orchid. This species, named for its distinctive conical or pyramidal inflorescence, was found at its peak flowering stage, making it an exceptionally easy and rewarding find.
The numerous plants observed displayed their characteristic dense, multi-flowered terminal spikes, ranging in color from pale pink to intense purple. This flourishing display aligns perfectly with its typical flowering period, which generally occurs between May and July. The orchids were thriving in open, sunny areas, particularly along road margins, a habitat consistent with their known preference for calcareous or basic soils. This abundance underscores its general conservation status as 'Least Concern' and highlights the rich botanical diversity present even in common roadside environments.
