Observation of Neotinea maculata in the Aude Department
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent exploration across various locations in the Aude department, southern France, we dedicated our time to searching for diverse orchids. On this particular outing, our focus was especially drawn to Neotinea maculata, popularly known as the Dense-flowered Orchid. Initially, our search only revealed dried specimens, a sign that spring was progressing and the blooming period for some species had already passed. However, with persistence and a stroke of luck, we managed to locate about ten individuals in good flowering condition, a truly rewarding find.
This terrestrial orchid is known for being a slender, small, and discreet plant, often not exceeding 15 cm in height, although it can reach up to 40 cm. Its inflorescence features a very dense spike of tiny, pale-colored flowers, characteristics that make it particularly challenging to detect and, as we observed, to photograph with the desired clarity. The discovery of these optimal specimens in forest clearings and scrub formations in Aude enhances our understanding of its distribution in this part of the Mediterranean region, where it typically flowers from March through June.
