Observation of the Burnt Orchid (Neotinea ustulata) in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
Our recent field exploration across various points within the Aude department in France led to a significant botanical discovery. We had the opportunity to observe two fine specimens of the Burnt orchid, Neotinea ustulata.
These terrestrial orchids, known for their distinctive bicolored flowers, were found in excellent condition. Typically reaching 10 to 50 cm in height, the Neotinea ustulata is characterized by its upper buds, which present a dark red or purple "burnt" appearance before opening. The lower flowers display a white, trilobate labellum adorned with crimson red spots, while the sepals and petals form a helmet-like structure. This species often thrives in open, well-lit grassy areas such as meadows or pastures, on alkaline or slightly acidic soils. The observation of these two individuals contributes valuable data to our understanding of the species' presence and condition within the region.
