Neottia nidus-avis: An Aude Roadside Sighting
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent field exploration spanning several locations within the Aude department in France, a notable observation was made late in the day. As we navigated towards one of our final survey points, a specimen of the Bird's-nest Orchid (Neottia nidus-avis) was spotted from the vehicle by the roadside.
This distinctive orchid is remarkable for its complete lack of chlorophyll, presenting a uniform yellowish-brown or honey color. Its specialized nature as a mycoheterotrophic plant means it derives nutrients by parasitizing fungi associated with forest trees. Though the sighting was brief and from a distance, the plant's presence near a wooded edge, even adjacent to a road, aligns with its typical habitat preference for intensely shaded, humus-rich soils found predominantly in deciduous or coniferous forests. This observation, made during our extensive survey, contributes to the recorded distribution of this unique species within the Aude region.
