Observation of Ophrys insectifera in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent botanical exploration across several points within the Aude department in France, we had the opportunity to document the presence of Ophrys insectifera, commonly known as the Fly orchid. This perennial terrestrial orchid, native to Europe, is noted for its floral mimicry, a characteristic that makes it particularly intriguing.
We encountered specimens of this species in good condition at multiple locations along our route. O. insectifera is distinguished by its flowers, which effectively mimic the appearance of a fly—a strategy it employs to attract its pollinators. Its flowers display greenish outer sepals and very narrow, dark inner petals that simulate an insect's antennae. The elongated, dark labellum, with a velvety texture and an iridescent central macula in purplish or blue hues, completes this deceptive imitation, replicating the sheen of insect wings. This hygrophilous species typically inhabits fresh meadows, scrub, and forests, preferring calcareous, humid, and alkaline soils. This observation in Aude contributes to the understanding of its distribution in the region.
