Abundant Woodcock Bee-orchid in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent exploration across several locations within the Aude department in France, we documented a notable presence of Ophrys scolopax, commonly known as the Woodcock Bee-orchid. This terrestrial orchid was found to be particularly numerous at all points visited, indicating healthy populations in the area.
Among the many specimens recorded, several displayed exceptionally dense inflorescences, with numerous flowers clustered closely on their stems. This species, characteristic of the Mediterranean region, typically thrives in luminous habitats such as meadows and open woodlands, conditions consistent with our findings. The distinctive trilobed labellum of Ophrys scolopax, known for its intricate patterns and velvety texture, was clearly visible on these flourishing plants. Its flowering typically occurs during the spring months. This observation highlights the robust presence of the Woodcock Bee-orchid within the Aude department.
