Observation of Ophrys vasconica in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent exploration across various locations within the Aude department in France, we had the opportunity to document Ophrys vasconica. This terrestrial European orchid, long a target for our observations, was found post-flowering, with specimens already dry and withered.
Despite their condition, we were particularly pleased to note one individual where the distinctive 'W' or 'omega'-shaped light stripe on its labellum was still clearly visible. Ophrys vasconica is a small plant, typically under 20 cm tall, known for its trilobed, 'boxing glove'-shaped labellum and its preference for dry calcareous substrates and gypsum soils. Its flowering period usually extends from March to June.
This species is quite localized and categorized as "Near Threatened" in France, with a declining population trend, making even observations of post-flowering specimens valuable for understanding its presence and distribution in the region.
