Observing Ophrys x castroviejoi in Baix Empordà
Observed on 4/25/2026
Description
In late April, I spent an afternoon revisiting familiar areas within the Baix Empordà region, spots I have enjoyed exploring in previous years. During this observation round, I located three specimens of the hybrid orchid Ophrys x castroviejoi, a natural cross between Ophrys scolopax and Ophrys speculum.
The observed individuals displayed their last flowers in good condition, consistent with their late-season bloom period, which, according to records, can extend until late April in northeastern Iberian Peninsula areas. This tuberous geophyte species, noted for its rarity and conservation importance, thrives in dry scrublands and grasslands. Its distinctive labellum, typically obovate and trilobed, ranged in color from reddish-brown to purplish-brown, featuring an X-shaped central macula. The presence of these specimens highlights the botanical diversity of this territory.
