Observation of Ophrys × peltieri in Baix Empordà
Observed on 4/25/2026
Description
During a recent afternoon spent revisiting familiar landscapes in the Baix Empordà region, a notable observation was made. In late April, we encountered approximately two specimens of the natural hybrid orchid, Ophrys × peltieri.
This hybrid, which results from the cross between Ophrys scolopax and Ophrys tenthredinifera, was located in one of our usual spots, in a habitat type consistent with pastures or herbaceous clearings within scrubland. The timing of this observation in late April aligns with the bulk of its flowering period in Catalonia, which primarily spans April and May. As an orchid that can sometimes go unnoticed or be confused with its parent species, recording these individuals provides an additional reference on its local presence in the area. This re-exploration of known areas continues to yield data on the region's orchid biodiversity.
