Man Orchid Sighting in the Garrotxa Region
Observed on 5/31/2026
Description
Following a morning dedicated to exploration at Puig del Far (Osona), our day led us to a specific location in the Garrotxa region, with the primary goal of observing Himantoglossum hircinum. However, the most significant discovery was the confirmation of the presence of Orchis anthropophora, commonly known as the Man Orchid, which was still holding its ground in the area.
This terrestrial orchid, aptly named for the anthropomorphic shape of its labellum, was found in a habitat consistent with its preferences: dry, stony, and well-drained calcareous soils, likely within a scrub clearing or dry meadow. The species, which typically flowers between April and June, displayed its characteristic yellowish-green flowers, often with reddish margins, and its distinctive trilobed labellum resembling a small human figure. A key identification feature is the absence of a spur. This record enhances our understanding of its distribution within these territories.
