Observation of Orchis olbiensis in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent exploration across various locations within the Aude department in southern France, we had the opportunity to document a specimen of Orchis olbiensis.
This herbaceous geophyte orchid is well-known for its strong resemblance to Orchis mascula, which often leads to botanical confusion. However, the morphological characteristics observed in the individual, such as its relatively smaller size and a noticeably laxer inflorescence, were key to its identification. A particularly distinctive feature was the labellum, which was more or less straight and trilobed, displaying its characteristic and very evident purplish spots or maculae against a white or very pale center.
The habitat of the find aligned with the species' preferences, as it typically grows in poor meadows or forest clearings with calcareous soils, common across its Western Mediterranean distribution. This observation adds to the recorded presence of Orchis olbiensis in this French region.
