Observation of Orchis provincialis in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent exploration across various locations within the Aude department in France, we had the opportunity to observe Orchis provincialis, commonly known as the Provence orchid. This medium-sized terrestrial orchid was found in a habitat consistent with its preferences, whether in open forests or meadows with cool semi-shade.
While many specimens had already finished flowering, we were fortunate to locate several individuals that were in an ideal state for photography. Orchis provincialis is characterized by its basal leaves, often adorned with large dark purple or brown spots, and a loose spike inflorescence bearing pale yellow or whitish flowers. Its trapezoidal, slightly trilobed labellum, which is a more intense yellow or orange in the center, typically features small reddish or purple spots. The flowering period for this species usually spans from mid-March or April to early June, suggesting our visit took place towards the latter part of its season in the Aude region. This observation provides a valuable record of its presence and condition in this locality.
