Observation of Lesser Butterfly-orchid in Aude, France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent exploration across various points within the Aude department in France, our attention was drawn to the presence of the exquisite Platanthera bifolia, commonly known as the Lesser Butterfly-orchid. This delicate terrestrial orchid is a notable inhabitant of diverse European landscapes.
We were fortunate to count a total of six fully flowering specimens. These plants, with their characteristic two large basal leaves, were presenting their cylindrical floral spikes, adorned with numerous white to greenish-white blooms. The long, slender spur, a key feature for nectar accumulation and pollinator attraction, was evident on the flowers, which are known to emit a sweet fragrance at night to attract moths. This species typically thrives in open forests, meadows, or woodland clearings, conditions often found within the varied terrains of Aude, and flowers during the summer months. This observation contributes to the ongoing record of its distribution in the region.
