Orchis x bergonii in Bloom in Garrotxa
Observed on 4/26/2026
Description
This Sunday, April 26th, we conducted a day of field research in the Garrotxa and La Selva regions. The first discovery of the day was the Orchis x bergonii in Garrotxa. We observed several specimens of this natural hybrid, which arises from the cross between the Monkey Orchid (Orchis simia) and the Man Orchid (Orchis anthropophora). The specimens were in good flowering condition, displaying their characteristic downward-pointing flowers and rounder leaves, an inflorescence silhouette clearly resembling O. anthropophora but with the colorations of O. simia. The presence of both parent species in the same location confirmed a suitable habitat for this hybrid, which thrives in dry meadows and sunny open areas. This observation marked a productive start to our exploration of the local flora.
