Discovery of numerous Orchis ×hybrida specimens in France
Observed on 5/9/2026
Description
During a recent exploration across various locations within the Aude department in France, we had the opportunity to document the presence of numerous specimens of the natural hybrid Orchis ×hybrida (Orchis purpurea × Orchis militaris). This nothospecies, resulting from the cross between the Lady Orchid and the Military Orchid, is a terrestrial geophyte that thrives in temperate biomes.
The numerous hybrid individuals were found in good flowering condition, surrounded by a significant population of Orchis purpurea, most of which had already passed their peak bloom, and Orchis militaris, which was still in good condition. This coexistence is characteristic, as Orchis ×hybrida emerges wherever the distributions of its two parent species overlap and densities are sufficient.
This hybrid, known for its morphological variation in the shape and pattern of its labellum, features helmet-shaped sepals and coloration that often blends white and pink tones. Its flowering period typically spans from April to June, consistent with the observed state of the parent species. This finding in Aude highlights the rich orchid flora of the region, which is particularly abundant in central and southern France for this species.
